PRINCESS COMMUTER JACKET

Project: Pattern Making & Design I – Final Project

Season: Fall 2025

Overview:

The Passenger Princess jacket reinterprets classic princess seams from womenswear tailoring, integrating reflective piping and webbing to enhance visibility for nighttime commuting. The design balances functionality, protection, and movement, while maintaining clean, stylish lines inspired by traditional womenswear construction.

Inspiration:

This project was inspired by a personal experience: being hit by a car while riding an electric scooter. After six herniated discs and a shoulder sprain, I was motivated to design garments that prioritize safety and freedom of movement, without compromising on form or style.

Design Features:

  • Mid-armhole princess seams on the front and back bodice

  • Sleeve with extended cap, darts, and elbow dart

  • Mandarin collar

  • Center-front lightweight zipper

  • Reflective nylon piping integrated through all darts and style lines

  • Top-stitched reflective webbing along the center-front panel and collar for added visibility

Materials:

  • Water-repellent 3.4 oz Nylon Taslan/Supplex (eco-friendly DWR)

  • 100% black poly trim

Key Takeaways:

This project allowed me to explore how functional design elements can be seamlessly integrated into tailored garments, prioritizing both safety and aesthetic. The combination of reflective elements and classic tailoring demonstrates my ability to merge technical skill with conceptual design.
